July 30th, 2008 an article about the exhibit with the picture of the Killdeer (Plover) and her chick appeared
in the Portland Press Herald. I saw it first thing this morning on-line in the York County Section of the Press Herald.
Coincidently, the lead story was about the endangered Piping Plovers at Goose Rocks Beach.
I had just enough time to copy my story before it disappeared...seems the
Press Herald was having problems with their website today. Here it is:

"Nancy Cooper Funk says that the way she sees the world comes through in the work that she does.
By MELANIE CREAMER, Staff Writer July 30, 2008

Nancy Cooper Funk has always noticed the little things.

Recently, she was driving with her husband, David Funk, and from the corner of her eye saw what she thought was a sparrow in a lawn near a field. The couple turned their car around and saw a killdeer mother with her chicks.

"It was one of those magical moments that could have easily gone by," Cooper Funk said. "It was a beautiful thing to see this mother and her four babies. They were running around. She called them and (the chicks) would crawl under wings so you couldn't even see them. We were able to observe that quietly from our car."

Cooper Funk captured the image on camera before driving away. She painted the scene, which will be included in her newest exhibit, "The Art of Nancy Cooper Funk -- nature, pets and scenes of the Kennebunks." The exhibit will be on display Monday through Aug. 28 at the Kennebunk Free Library.

Cooper Funk of Arundel is an artist and illustrator who combines ink with watercolor to create detailed drawings. She paints everything from birds, flowers and ocean scenes to critters that stroll through her garden.

She also creates illustrations for things such as invitations, menus and brochures. She enjoys doing commissioned pieces to capture a memory for someone. She said she draws inspiration from things around her and always has her camera handy to capture an image.

"It allows me the freedom to capture more images to work from. No matter where I am, I notice little things that most people would not see," she said. "The way that I see the world comes though in my art. It's something I feel I have to do. It's a part of me."

Cooper Funk gravitated to art at a young age and kept a strong focus throughout her life. In 1980, she and her husband moved from Connecticut to Kennebunkport and opened the Cooper Funk Gallery, which is now Maine Memories. In 2002, the couple built an art studio with gallery space in the center of their large perennial garden. They have three cats, Ellie May, Polly and Brody, who often appear in her work.

Cooper Funk last exhibited her work at the Kennebunk Free Library in March 2006. She said the library's Hank's Gallery is a great space to showcase the work of local artists.

"It was a great experience when I exhibited last time," she said. "I hope the viewer will take away from my exhibit a sense of calm and balance in a hectic world and an appreciation of nature and the small precious things in life that are often overlooked."

August 2, 2008 Saturday...set up the Exhibit at the Kennbunk Library in the morning.

After I arranged the paintings along the floor, David saved
the day by hanging them and improvising when the
wires that the Library provides for hanging an exhibit had
disappeared. He bought wire and devised his own method
and could reach the hooks along the moulding near the
ceiling without a ladder. Forgot a few things and brought too
many of others so a quick fine tuning is needed before
the reception.

Welcome to the exhibit!

August 6, 2008 ~ Wednesday...wake up to heavy rain that lasts the whole day!
This is the day for the reception from 5:30-7:30 pm.

At 3:30 Dave and I meet Dawn at the library...she is helping us with
the reception.
We bring in all of our baskets of goodies and flowers and
set up the reception table.

Dawn did a beautiful job putting it all together.
I want to thank all of my friends who contributed goodies to
make this possible. Lynda baked lemon bread and brought it
over in the rain this morning along with Ruth's scrumptious
cookies and Shelley's cheese and crackers and Cindy's
ginger snaps and gigantic chocolate bar. Denise came over in
the pouring rain with flowers, chocolate chip cookies and brownies
and other things in a great basket. Dawn prepared the fruit
and vegetable platters, made the punch ( compliments of Lynda)
made the dip and assembled it all!
Judy arrived at the reception with beautiful flowers from her
garden!

It was a lovely reception and I was so happy to see everyone
who stopped by.
It reminded me of our days when we had our Gallery and some
of the people I had met in our gallery over the years made
surprise appearances.
Thank you all!

I hope you can stop by the exhibit if you are in the area.
( I won't be there but the paintings wiil!)
It will be at the Kennebunk Library through August 28th
during Library Hours and it might be best to call the Library
for sometimes that room is used for conferences.
Library phone number: 207 985-2173

Also, if you are in the area, I hope you can stop by my
studio/gallery. It is just a few miles from the Library.
You can call me for directions: 207 967-2568

Thanks!

Nancy

We took down the exhibit in the morning of August 29th...It was a wonderful experience to
exhibit at the Library. I thank all involved and those who came to see the show.
Hopefully I will be back there in August of 2010.
