October 1,
2008 ~ Wednesday...an overcast morning...rain is likely

The wheelbarrow
is still full of water from
the last rain...

As I wandered around the garden early
on this damp morning, I suddenly realised
I was being watched.

October 2,
2008 ~Thursday...clouds and rain then bright sparling clarity

Dave set
up his bas-relief woodcarving display in Hank's Gallery
Room at the Kennebunk Library , Main St. Kennebunk
this morning.
"Another
View of the Garden-Relief Woodcarving"
It will be on display during Library hours through October 30th.

October 3,
2008 ~Friday...a very chilly windy start to the day..makes one
feel as
though winter is getting closer... a funny day of sun, clouds
and a sudden downpour.

We stopped
by the bakery for hot chocolate this
morning and I met "Summer"!

October 4,
2008 ~Saturday...blue skies, clear and cool

I was so
happy to see the pipers by the water's edge
late this afternoon...there have been very few this autumn...

October 5,
2008 ~Sunday...a chilly morning with sun and clouds
we still don't have heat in the house...

Polly loves
to sit on a pillow at the computer with Dave
in the evening.

October 6,
2008 ~Monday...sun and clouds...a bit of rain

Cormorants
look so expressive as they dry their wings...

October 7,
2008 ~Tuesday, woke up this morning to a very cool downstairs
in the
house...about 55°...luckily the sun came out and warmed things
up and then
after more than a week of trying to connect the heater, David
had success!

Today is
a special day for it is the birthday
of Dan ( Dave's brother ~ my brother-in-law).
Wishing Dan a very happy birthday
out in sunny California where it is 86°!

We returned to the Kennebunk Library today
so David could add his carved barn owl to
his exhibit which is currently on display
through the month of October.

October 8,
2008 ~Wednesday...sunny and milder...blue skies

Much honking
coming from the sky as a chevron flew overhead heading south.

October 9,
2008 ~Thursday...what a beautiful day...warm and sunny

Made a scarecrow
today to bring to a craft fair
called
"A Gathering of Scarecrows"
on Sunday Ocotber 12th outside under tent
at the Nonantum Hotel on Ocean Ave,
in Kennebunkport from 1 pm. - 4pm.
Each artist/ craftsperson is bringing a
scarecrow along with their art or crafts.
Funds raised by the Nonantum will go to help
with home heating oil for the needy.

October 10,
2008 ~Friday....a special day...and very beautiful, mild and
dreamy

Sending very
Happy Birthday wishes
to Katherine in Germany!
(Dave's sister, my sister-in-law)

It's also our anniversary...David and I were
married many years ago...ten (day)
ten ( month) at 10:10 am.
Also, my parents
met for the first time on
October 10th, 1943...

October 11,
2008 ~Saturday...again, it is warm, sunny and a beautiful autumn
day...
the town is packed with people on this long holiday weekend...the
traffic makes
one feel as though it is a busy summer day in the height of the
tourist season.

We've had
this scarecrow in our everything room
in our small house now since Thursday.
It seems that has Brody just noticed it!

Tomorrow (Sunday)
afternoon is the craft fair with the
Gathering of Scarecrows at the Nonantum Hotel in Kennebunkport.

October 12,
2008 ~Sunday...another sparkling clear autumn day...

Along the
Kennebunk River on Sunday morning, the cormorants were sunning
themselves
on the dock as we waited for the time to arrive to set up my
display and scarecrow for
the Gathering of the Scarecrows Festival at the Nonantum Hotel.

The tent
was up and the tables were being arranged.

A Wedding
was in progress...

Some campaigning
was going on...

My scarecrow
had fallen over while I was briefly
away and thankfully everyone who saw her
go down scrambled to put her back together
again and added some heavy rocks to the base
of her wooden stand.
In the afternoon a chilling seabreeze swept
through the tent and I was so cold
I was considering borrowing the
mittens and scarf from my scarecrow!

October 13,
2008 ~Monday...a cooler day and overcast....

The autumn
colors are beginning to dominate the yard.

While riding by the ocean tonight I caught sight of the full
moon
above the rooftop of one of the majestic houses along the coast.
I signed up for
a blog today and I don't quite know what
I'm going to do but so far it has a title,
"Shells and Roses" and not much else!
Here it is:

October 14,
2008 ~Tuesday....thought it was to be warm and sunny but it was
overcast and on the
cool side!

Late in the
afternoon we went out for a walk on the beach and
had to bundle up...the ocean had a very cold look to it and there
was a guy with a surf kite heading out into the sea.

October 15,
2008 ~Wednesday...such a beautiful day..I decide to ride my bike
to the
Post Office to mail my sister's Birthday card.

Many leaves
had covered the ground round the maple
tree at the Post Office.
David happened to be going by the Post Office as I was about
to ride home...so he threw my bike in the back of the car and
we
took a ride to see if the plovers were there at our special place.

They were!

Tonight the moon was veiled in mystery.

October 16,
2008 ~Thursday...rainy and mild

The trees
looked so beautiful in all of their autumn splendor
on our way to town this afternoon.

October 17,
2008 ~Friday...we're back to the beautiful weather

Down at the
beach there was a gathering of birds which
at first glance appeared to be seagulls but upon closer
inspection, they were terns!

October 18,
2008 ~Saturday...sunny and cold...the first frost was last night

David had
thought mice were eating the fallen apples
but realized today how much a bee can eat!

October 19, 2008
~Sunday...sunny and clear, cold and breezy
and a very special day.

Happy Birthday
to my sister, Cindy!
Been thinking about you all day and
wrote this message in the sand for you.
I remember so well, when she was
a baby and we all listened to the
song, "When the Swallows Come
Back to Capistrano" over and over
all night long so she would sleep.

October 20,
2008 ~ Monday...baby blue skies, still air and mild temperatures
but the sea is raging!

There
had been a storm out at sea and the surf was fantastic.

October 21,
2008 ~ Tuesday...overcast and it feels colder
than it is because of the dampness in the air.

If you look
very closely, you can see chippy
on the roof of his house. He lives in a doghouse.
A friend gave us a dog house though we don't
have dogs and this chipmunk seems to have
taken it over.

October 22,
2008 ~ Wednesday...quite cold and very windy with some rain.
Saw friends from New Jersey who stopped by with Nicole and Danielle,
their beautiful greyhounds.

Our porch
is filling up with apples from
our yard..there are russets and liberty.
Now to find the time to process them into
something that could last.

October 23,
2008 ~ Thursday... blue skies and calm

Brody took
a lovely cat nap this afternoon as the streaming sun cast
a golden glow on his ginger fur.

October 24,
2008 ~ Friday... another sunny day

This is one
of 2 baby squirrels that were released in our
yard yesterday after being rescued by Lisa when they
were several days old and separated from their Mom.
They are now old enough to be on their own and I hope
they meet up with other red squirrels soon to learn the
ways of being a squirrel and of surviving this winter.
We have been having some crazy adventures here
which I will elaborate on more later.
You can visit my "Furry and Feathered Friends" blog:
www.furryandfeatheredfriends.blogspot.com
to see more about them.
If you click here you will go to the squirrels!

October 25,
2008 ~ Saturday...some clouds and very strong winds in the evening

David's Reception
for his Woodcarving exhibit took place this
afternoon. It was a special afternoon.
We'd like to thank everyone who stopped by.
(We served a Merlot Wine made by a friend and I designed his
wine label.)

October 26,
2008 ~ Sunday...the day begins with drizzle, mist and clouds,
with a high tide
and great waves. The day is transformed into clear blue skies
and mild temperatures by mid-day.

Watching
the surf...

October 27,
2008 ~ Monday...a beautiful mild day...blue skies prevail!

Ellie relaxes
upstairs in the studio, waiting for me to settle
down to work!

October 28,
2008 ~ Tuesday...cloudy and windy and we just get the air-conditioners
in before the heavy rain starts....late afternoon clearing with
dramatic clouds...and
then later into the evening the sound of the wind and heavy rain
tapping on the window
starts up again.

Some beautiful
shades of autumn on the wet pavement...

Polly climbed
onto a pillow on Dave's lap so she could
snuggle close to the computer on this rainy night.

October 29,
2008 ~ Wednesday... a wintry day...very windy and blustery with
the sky that I love... full of blue clouds...

Cape Porpoise
looked lovely and it felt as though it could
snow!
Saw my first loon today...so they have returned to the
ocean from the lakes.

October 30,
2008 ~ Thursday...the sun shines and warms things up a bit.

Polly has
been nibbling the catnip plant beside her.

October 31,
2008 ~Friday..sun and clear...Happy Halloween!
