May 1, 2008
~ Thursday... sunny with clear blue skies...overnight it was
below freezing...
frost on the flowers...

Last night
Dave moved the birdfeeder that the raccoon frequented.
He placed it away from the house with a platter of sunflower
seeds on the ground..
All that was left was this feeder on a post. Well, the raccoon
went for this
feeder close to the house and emptied it and left it hanging
sideways!
In the process he knocked over the heavy cement top of a bird
bath.

This chickadee looked very confused
this morning
finding the familiar bird feeder in a very different
position.

May 2, 2008
~ Friday... the sun shines in the morning but clouds move in
and it
is very chilly for the rest of the day...and about 3 pm. the
electricity goes out til 9 pm.
A dump truck hit a pole and broke it and it took out power in
Biddeford,
Kennebunkport and Arundel. For a late dinner ( around 8:30 pm)
we took out
mashed potatoes from the Landing Store and dined in the car in
Dock Square where
they had lights! It was hot and delicious!

Brody looked
so adorable in his cat cube...actually
it's Polly's cat cube but he has taken it over.

Polly napped above him in her window basket.

Ellie May surveyed everything from her
studio window.

May 3, 2008
~ Saturday... cold and gray with a raw drizzle...it's also cold
in our house...
looking forward to a sunny day ( maybe Monday) to take the chill
out of the house.

Ellie May
climbed a moutain of cloth for
a nap in the studio.

May 4, 2008
~ Sunday... it is very cold...raw and rainy today...the cold
has seeped into the
house... 56 degrees inside ...found our old electric heater and
it brings us up to 58 degrees!
We aimed it in Polly's direction to warm her up!

Meanwhile,
I glanced out of the
window to see a big shape in the
willow tree..the porcupine is back.

May 5, 2008
~ Monday... so happy to see the sun shining all day...it warms
the
house up to 62 degrees..we open the windows to let the warmer
outside air in...
the cats enjoy the porch...

First time
this year I rode my bike to town and just
kept going til I reached the sea.

In our yard the trout lilies are blooming...
a carpet of yellow with trout like leaves.

Also, the pink shadblow serviceberry is
blooming which means the May flies
will be here soon.

May 6, 2008
~ Tuesday... a beautiful day ,,,clear and blue...

Forget-me-nots
reflect the blue of the sky today.

May 7, 2008
~ Wednesday... sun and even warmer today...

Never saw
so many gulls at the beach...we think they
may be a gathering of young gulls learning to fish.

May 8, 2008
~ Thursday... sun and clouds ... breezy and humid...nearly 80
degrees...
open all of the windows and let the warmth in for the cool temperatures
may return soon.

Brody fell
over on the little cat shelf on the front porch
while enjoying the mild weather.

Unaware of each other, this chipmunk and I
nearly had a collision on foot...we both
suddenly froze and chippy ran in the
opposite direction.

Enveloped in blue in the early evening walk...
with a pleasant breeze.

May 9, 2008
~ Friday... An overcast day with much cooler temperatures...
a good day for concentrating on working on pet portrait commissions...

Ellie is
overseeing my pet portrait
commission and adding the right
amount of inspiration to help me
capture the feeling of these 7 cats.

It's a good
day for some of us to nap!

May 10, 2008
~ Saturday...sun and clouds with a brisk breeze

On our way
to Wells in the early evening
we spotted this solitary hawk in the distance.

May 11, 2008
~ Sunday...clear blue skies... it's a lovely breezy day...
Happy Mother's Day to all kinds of Mothers....
I always thought
someone else was living in our studio
besides Ellie May ... strange sounds would come from the attic...
this morning I heard a commotion and I couldn't quite determine
where is was
coming from...I glanced out of the upstairs studio window towards
the roof overhang...
and voila: a baby red squirrel on Mother's Day...then there were
2 and then 3!

Here's the
first brave adventurer...

May 12, 2008
~ Monday...a very cold windy day with sun but a wintry feel to
the air...

Four of the
baby red squirrels filled the ledge visible
from the studio window and then a fifth one appeared!

At the end of the day,
a rose-breasted grosbeak sang from
above in a tree.

May 13, 2008
~ Tuesday...a warm sunny day returns...I saw a catbird and
the baby red squirrels frolicked in the apple blossom branch...

On the porch,
Polly was enjoying this
weather perched on the top shelf ...while
Brody snuck out and slid below her making
it impossible for her to go back inside.
I came to her rescue.

May 14, 2008
~ Wednesday...sunny and clear crisp air in the 60's
a day to hang the laundry on the line...

While doing
laundry we wandered over to the
Port Bakery for some tea on the patio.
The Kennebunk Fiire Engine calmly pulled into
the driveway. Next thing, they were changing
the old flag on the very tall flagpole with a
new flag using their ladder!

May 15, 2008
~ Thursday... sun and the deep blue clouds I love in the late
afternoon

I have been
totally captivated by the red squirrel
babies...They have taken over my life
and I am unable to do much else...
I keep going over to the window to observe them
and look for them when I'm outside. I have taken
so many photos and feel inspired to
make a book about them with drawings and
watercolors based on my photos...

May 16, 2008
~ Friday... a mixture of sun and clouds

Saw the first
hummingbird for this year today.
Still fascinated
by the little red squirrels and I saw their Mom
today. She was sitting on our old disabled Volvo, eating dried
apples from the autumn that Dave had put up there to keep off
the
ground. They sat there all winter and now I am so glad they are
providing nourishment for the Mama squirrel.

May 17, 2008
~Saturday...sun clear and crisp

This afternoon
we went to visit our special place,
Marblehead.
It was here that David and I met many years ago.
I had a little art exhibit in that building at the top
of the street where I lived and David bought one
of my paintings...

The harbor was at the bottom of my street...

May 18, 2008
~ Sunday...a sunny clear start to the day and by late afternoon
the showers materialize...
Happy Birthday to our niece, Emmy!

The beautiful
view is from my cousin's log cabin in
Littleton, Massachusetts.

A ride to
Connecticut with family brings me to my niece's
Bridal Shower for the afternoon...then back to
Massachusetts and then home to Maine...a whirlwind trip.

May 19, 2008
~ Monday... a very windy cool day with lots of sunshine...
clouds form in the afternoon ...

Wandering
through the flower garden is a constant delight.

Getting ready
to plant the seed potatoes...
some of these potatoes are from our last years
garden and they are sprouting and will be planted
to make more potatoes.

The full
moon rises tonight...

May 20, 2008
~ Tuesday...sun and clouds and cool and breezy once again

Here's Brody
with his typical reach out
position...

May 21, 2008
~ Wednesday...blue skies and sunshine greet the day ...late morning
dark blue
gray clouds move in with distant thunder and sprinkles...sun
and clouds alternate all day...

A lovely
day for Otis, the cat down the road
to admire at his belted cows!

May 22, 2008
~ Thursday... it is cool and cloudy and by late afternoon the
sky is so
dramatic ...

The crabapple
is flowering..the entire tree is covered with
blossoms.

The clouds
parted revealing a patch of blue over the sea.
During our walk the rain sprinkled down.

May 23, 2008
~ Friday...sun and clouds...feels warmer so we open the doors
and windows
to welcome the fresh air inside...
Happy Birthday to our niece, Shaina!

On the porch,
I spent the day working on a painting of the
baby red squirrels... the beginning of their story...

Ellie May sat beside me as I worked...

Then she decided my lap was better for a closer
inspection.

This time of year is so beautiful and inspiring for
everythng is lush and green and the lilacs are beginning
to blossom, filling the air with their fragrance.

May 24, 2008
~ Saturday...another day of sun and wonderful clouds..I love
the
clouds with all shades of blues... there's a beautiful quality
to the light...

It is very
peaceful and dreamy by the sea.

Ellie is
looking very dainty as she spends
most of the day on the porch.

May 25, 2008
~ Sunday... clear blue skies and warm but not hot...just right...

The Eleanor
Schooner and the Pineapple Ketch... a lovely sight to behold
on a breezy
summerlike day.

May 26, 2008
~ Monday... warm air and clear skies til late afternoon when
the sky turns the
beautiful shades of deep blues that I love.
A day of remembrance...

Share a morning
cup of tea with Brody.

Memorial Day flags...

Saw my first beach roses of this year at the
Colony Beach this afternoon along with the
beach peas...

May 27, 2008
~ Tuesday... a balmy day...breezy in the 70's with sun and dark
threatening
clouds that look so beautiful... Dave was planting someone's
garden a few miles from us near
the sea and it rained very hard while at home not a speck of
rain.

I've been
keeping a watchful eye on this young
mama mourning dove who has been sitting on
her nest built in our trellis.

May 28, 2008
~ Wednesday... sunny and very windy ... we went to the Portland
Farmer's Market
in Monument Square and the short walk from the car to the market
was extremely windy!
Got some heirloom vegetables for the garden.

The Farmer's
Market was bustling with city folks...so much going on...
even music!

A walk on
the beach just around sunset was stimulating and
reflective for it was chilly and calm!

May 29, 2008
~ Thursday... sunny and breezy with high temperature nearly 80
degrees...

I was searching
for Brody this afternoon and he
was no where to be seen...I had walked by
Polly asleep in a window basket when I noticed
that the blankets below her had a bulge...
now I knew where Brody was... he sure is trying
everything to be close to Polly!

May 30, 2008
~ Friday... a sunny day and on the warm side...

We set out
for Bennington Vermont for the weekend
to be reunited with the California relatives for
our niece, Jenny's Graduation from Bennington College...
the mountains were magnificent along the way.

It's a very long trip from Maine and in Vermont a truck appeared
in front of us and this was painted on the back of it...
my thoughts exactly!

In the evening, under the tents, the graduating class of 2008
had a dinner
with family and friends and wonderful speakers.
We also enjoyed the panoramic view.

May 31, 2008
~ Saturday...threatening rain all day...the Bennington College
graduation takes place in a tent...

Our neice
and her Mom after the graduation...

The storm arrives in the early evening with thunder, lightning
and
hail!
