March 1, 2008 ~ Saturday...it's snowing! The snow turned to rain and back again
several times...making the pathway turn to slush!

Checking the conditions outside
first thing this morning, Polly strolled out
onto the porch on a fine layer of snow
that had sifted in through the screen.

March 4, 2008 ~ Tuesday... for a brief time the sun was out and the temperature
soared to 50º...the temperature remained warm as the sky turned gray for the day.
The rains came late...snow is melting and puddles are getting deep here, there
and everywhere.

Brody has taken over ...he settled himself down very nicely right
on top of all of my receipts to help me with accounting...

The waves were crashing as we took a little walk along the beach
this afternoon...

March 8, 2008 ~Saturday...an overcast morning with the prediction of rain...
the ground is visible in patches and along with it much activity, especially around
the birdfeeders.

This is the first time I have seen the chipmunk this year....
must have just emerged from it's winter hibernation and
is filling up!

While sorting through my things in the studio, I glanced up
and saw Ellie May looking down at me with such a content
look on this rainy afternoon.

March 9, 2008 ~Sunday..it's a bright sunny day with winds that are swaying the trees...
it sounds like a freight train at times...
A special day for Birthdays....celebrate and remembrance with love...

First thing this morning, I saw the shape of robins in the tree
outside the upstairs window...

A special message for Tyler, Happy Birthday!

This woodpecker is a regular at the bird feeder...
(suet is a favorite)

The waves were wild and crashing with the wind...
at the right angle, rainbows were visible in the following
sea spray.

much meaning to us.

March 11, 2008 ~Tuesday... a bit more of the ground is appearing as another sunny
day greets us but it's still on the cold side with the snow cover shrinking slowly.

which to admire Polly.

March 13, 2008 ~Thursday... blue skies and cold air...

©2008 Nancy Cooper Funk grouse in the rhododendrum
Late this afternoon, I was looking through the window
and noticed the leaves on the rhododendrum closest
to the house were flapping. As I was wondering
who could be causing that, our resident grouse
poked her head out. She is fond of eating
rhododendrum leaves.

March 14, 2008 ~Friday... mostly cloudy and gray with hints of sun and in the 40's
and we can smell spring in the air.

©2008 Nancy Cooper Funk polly the tabby cat and the holly
Polly is an indoor cat but stepped outside onto
the front steps this morning.
She seemed to sniff the air for signs of spring.
She also found a scent on the holly
that was very intriguing.

Among the many birds at the bird feeders today, this
cardinal had an especially quizzical look.

yard as the snow gently fell.

March 17, 2008 ~ Monday... blue skies and a cold wind...

Today we received a wonderful gift of 2 catnip bags for our
cats from Laurah of the Kennebec River Company.
She makes all kinds of organic catnip products.
Brody and Polly immediately started rubbing and rolling
on them, having a grand time!
They will have to share with Ellie May!

March 18, 2008 ~ Tuesday... sunny and not too chilly for a walk on the beach...
by late afternoon the clouds rolled in and snow and sleet will move in tomorrow.

©2008 Nancy Cooper Funk snow bunting bird on the beach pebbles
While walking on the beach, David noticed a solitary bird that he had
never seen before...he called me over and I took photos and looked it
up when we got home...it's a snow bunting! It was pecking
around in the beach pebbles looking for seeds.

Rough seas and a gentle moon.

March 22, 2008 ~ Saturday... Brilliant sun and still the winds make it very chilly...
winter coats are still in use!

There is actually a cat nested in this gigantic pile of
laundry, still warm from our long overdue visit to the
laundrymat.

Here's a better view of Brody enjoying

for food and here's a sparrow that found
something.

March 25, 2008 ~ Tuesday... A bright sunny day with a winter chill in the air...

I was so surprised when I turned around to see Brody
gazing so intently and so very close to Polly.
Polly gets nervous when Brody is too close to her
but maybe things will change.
( I'm thinking that perhaps she didn't see him!)

In the early evening, Ellie May took her place in one of her
baskets on my work table to inspire me as I painted birds.

March 26, 2008 ~ Wednesday... It's sunny with lovely clouds and it feels milder
even with the strong winds...

The waves were rough and windswept...

The first crocuses appeared as soon as a patch of snow
melted today.

March 27, 2008 ~ Thursday... Iight clouds mixed with sun and in the 40's

Brody is still trying to get as close to Polly as possible without
creating a bad reaction...

artist paint brush ©NCooperFunk
March 28, 2008 ~ Friday....awaken to a winter wonderland...the snow continues all day...

Birds flock to our yard today during this
snow storm...we have many apples leftover from the
autumn which provide sustenance.

They seemed to be having a discussion about the apples!

artist paint brush ©NCooperFunk
March 29, 2008 ~ Saturday....it had snowed a little more overnight but today has blue skies and
white clouds with bitter cold air...

Looking out towards the studio this morning, I can see Ellie May looking
back at me wondering, "Where is she already!"
This is spring in Maine... still with the look and feel of winter.

artist paint brush ©NCooperFunk
March 30, 2008 ~ Sunday....blue skies...and the warmth of the sun makes
it feel less chilly for a walk on the beach in the afternoon ( though I'm still bundled
up in my winter jacket, scarf and gloves)

In our yard, the crocuses came out right through the snow!

artist paint brush ©NCooperFunk
March 31, 2008 ~ Monday....the day starts out cloudy and gray and just after noon,
big snowflakes come down and soon mixes with a cold raw rain...

Brody is ever so slowly working his
way over to be closer to Polly.
