June 1, 2007 ~ Friday ~ the day starts out overcast and drizzly but by afternoon it's sunny and humid.
Happy Birthday to Rick!

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk American Redstart bird
An unusual bird appeared this morning when I
peered out of the front door....we can't seem to
identify it.
We have just identified the bird and it is very
appropriate for today. It's an American Redstart.
It's my brother's birthday and he started out
as a redhead!

you can see her mom, Ellie May in

down the path from the house.

June 3, 2007 ~ Sunday ~ overcast.... drizzle and cold...almost needed a winter coat!
What a contrast from yesterday's heat wave!

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk, Nancy's art exhibit at the Green Heron Inn
I had a lovely weekend as the "Artist in Residence"
at the Green Heron Inn in Kennebunkport for the
"Arts in the Inns" event. The Innkeepers were
wonderful and the Inn is so cozy and comfortable,
everyone feels right at home and relaxed.
Enjoyed chatting with friends and meeting new people.
Thanks Dan and Tony for your terrific hospitality!

June 4, 2007 ~ Monday ~ rain....rain....heavy rain...and more rain

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk, poor visiblity on the highway
A heavy rain beat down on our car today as we
traveled to Concord, Massachusetts.
It created such poor visibility that the
vehicles ahead of us just vanished into
the thick mist. The trip was worth it to be able to
see Dan, Jenny and George over lunch, though it
was all too fast....was like a whirlwind visit...
very much like the weather.

afternoon. Most just missed us but one caught us
and Polly and I sat close together for comfort
til the storm ended.

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk Gooch's Beach Kennebunk
We headed for the beach early this morning for a walk.

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk Abe the Yorkie on Gooch's Beach
As I walked towards the jetty, I noticed an
old friend, Abe the Yorkie and his mom, Diane.
I had painted a portrait of Abe in 2001...you can see it
in the
" 2001 dog portrait samples "
in the "paintings of pets" section of this website.
Abe was with a bunch of friends at the
beach and I was introduced to Henry and Sherman.

Here's Henry and Sherman and they both have
compelling rescue stories. Henry was saved from an
abusive situation in Chicago and Sherman was
rescued from hurricane Katrina.

Polly is wearing a garland of catnip this morning
as she takes in the morning sun.

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk Polly the cat wearing a garland of catnip
It ceratinly had a relaxing effect on her...she is in bliss!

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk Brody the ginger cat on blue jeans
Meanwhile, upstairs Brody has settled on
Dave's blue jeans....we always have
Dave's pants on the floor, on a shelf and
on the bed for Brody loves to sleep on them.

A drama unfolds....David asked me,"Where's Polly?" I replied the last time I saw her she
was in her box on the porch. He exclaimed, "OH NO!!!" I couldn't imagine why! All of our cats are now indoor cats.
Polly had crawled into the box on the porch still wearing her catnip garland..Dave never thought that she was in there
when he left the screen door propped opened to let a hornet escape at it's leisure. Well, it seems that not only the
hornet escaped....Polly was no where to be seen inside or outside, The yard is like a jungle...there is so much lush
foliage that it is impossible to find a cat hiding out. We wandered the yard looking under bushes and calling her name,
clanging her food dish and hoping that she would appear..... not a sign of her.
We went back in the house and then I went on the porch and tapped her dish with a spoon...there she was...slowly
sauntering over to the house and up the steps to have a bite to eat. Don't know where she was but we were so
happy to have her home!

Upon closer inspection, we saw
Polly's catnip garland beside
the exit closest to the door where
she must have escaped.

The yard was impossible to find a
cat in. We were so thankful she found
her way home...think food had
something to do with it!

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk painted birdhouse with a mouse's nest insie
When Dave had pried the roof off of the
birdhouse I had painted that had
adorned our trellis, he didn't expect to
see a nest belonging to a mouse
made out of our cats fur.
(When we comb our cats, we place their
fur outside in the vines by the front
porch for the birds)
A magical thing happened
this afternoon.
Brody had just woken up
and I bent down to see him.
I've done this so many times
but today I happened to glance
under a small bookcase where
something silvery looking
caught my eye through the
dust. Thought it was
a button....upon closer
inspection, it was my ring
that has been missing since
January 19th.
I had thought it had slipped off
of my finger while shoveling snow
and kept hoping to find it when the
snow melted.
I was so happy to be reunited
with it for it was given to me
by David for an anniversary
years ago. I think Brody
had something to do with it!

Ellie May was on the lookout early this morning.

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk mama snapping turtle
It wasn't til Dave went out that he noticed the
mama snapping turtle across the street in our
neighbor's driveway.
Ever since we started building our house in the
1980's, right around the summer solstice, a very
large mama snapping turtle would emerge from the
brook to locate a sandy spot in which to lay her eggs.
We had alot of sand in our driveway and other spots
when we started our house and she often layed
her eggs somewhere in our yard.
Now she is seen along the sandy patches on the side
of our street, where she digs holes in which to lay
her eggs. We don't know where they are yet but in the
fall when the eggs hatch there will be dozens of baby
snapping turtles in the street, along the side and
traveling through yards to find their way to the brook.

spur of the moment.

June 12, 2007 ~ Tuesday ~ another day of sun and clouds with gentle breezes

David had harvested the catnip and left it on the porch to dry.
When he opened the front door he was amazed to see the state Polly was in.

June 13, 2007 ~ Wednesday ~ starts out raining and on the cool side....when the rain
stops it becomes colder and the wind makes us want to wear a warm jacket....

On our way home from errands, adorning a ditch on the
side of the road were Blue Flag irises dancing

a ride to the Post Office and with the cool air I just kept
on pedalling til I reached the sea.

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk Lilly the black lab at the beach

Dave and I took a walk in the evening
on Gooch's Beach...it actually got chilly
but when we met Lilly on the beach, she
had just come running out of the ocean
and was ready to go back in to retrieve
her tennis ball as soon as her Mom
was kind enough to throw it.

he was adopted along with his
brother, Sebastian, by the Hotel.

When I thought it might rain, I decided to move
my bike to a sheltered spot and that's when I
noticed something very wrong. The inner tube
tire must have exploded from the heat...the
front tire was so flat it was falling off the rim.

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk Ellie May the cat helps me paint a bird

It's comfortable on the porch today,
and as soon as I sat down to begin working
on a bird painting, Ellie May climbed upon
my lap to study what I was working on
for she is very interested in birds.

June 20, 2007 ~ Wednesday ~ cloudy....small showers....humid

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk mourning dove

I kept seeing mourning doves today and
and this afternoon Dave told me he
saw a baby dove in the grass.I hurried
over with my camera.

©2007Nancy Cooper Funk baby mourning dove

The parents were nearby but we didn't
quite know if the baby could fly and
were worried about it's safety. I didn't
want to frighten it so I left and snuck
back a while later looking for it in the
grass but it was gone.

I was so stunned when I turned and
looked up to see the baby with the
mother up in a wood pile as still as
could be.

Woton was with Fricka and they had been in
