Nancy's Journal
photos ~ drawings ~ thoughts

This is the beginning of
my on-line journal.

I will try to make entries
often.

December has been an
interesting month so far.
We had snow last week
and today it must be
50 degrees!
I saw a mosquito last night!

Our Family

Here's Brody, our upstairs
cat...he's on the stairs
looking for Polly,
our downstairs cat!

They can't be trusted to be
alone with each other...
it may appear
that he is admiring her but
actually he's stalking her.

His unusal vise is that
he loves to eat plastic,
especially plastic bags.
He searches the house for
it and looks like a plastic
sniffing cat!
To protect him,
we have taken to hiding
all plastic that
enters our house.

I can't resist his flirtatious eyes.
He is very sweet with me.

He loves chasing a plastic ring
on a cloth belt and diving onto and
into a gigantic brown packing box
that takes up alot of space in
my upstairs workroom.

Ellie May is my art studio cat.
She supervises my work and
adds her own touch
as she dances across my
work table usually on her
way to get a bite to eat.

She has taken up shredding
paper. Abstract expressionism
with torn edges is her art form.
She started out with paper bags
when she lived in our gallery
but now that she has her own
studio, any kind of paper will
do, including my art paper.

Polly, the downstairs cat is
the daughter of Ellie May.
That's another story.

She's very dear and is
much older than Brody
and was here first.

She's rather sedentary.
She doesn't understand the
agressive playfulness
of a younger male cat and
is terrified by his advances.
He just wants to chase
something and is prepared to
sit and wait great lengths
of time just staring at her,
waiting for her to move.

They are all indoor cats.
Bugs help to divert his
attention in the summer
which takes a bit of pressure
away from her!
They can be together only with
supervison.

She adores her
finger-puppet mouse and treats
it as though it was her baby.
She talks to it and moves it
around when no one is watching.

The milder weather permitted
Dave to do some repairs on
the porch roof....
he's trying to get as
much done before winter
really sets in.

"Carlo" stopped by the studio
this morning with Andy to pick up the
pet portrait
I had just finished.
Ellie May was a bit cautious and crawled
over to her window basket to study him.

December 16, 2006

Saturday morning, it was so lovely
I decided to take my bicycle out
and ride to the sea. I found myself
going to the back of where
our gallery used to be....
where the river meets the sea.

Upon closer inspection, there
was a seal in the river.
It would surface briefly near
the buoys and quickly
diappear.

December 16, 2006

Paused along my journey to
take photos along the coast.

The sea had a beautiful green cast.

December 16, 2006

Rode through Dock Square on my
way home and observed these
sights along the way.

Saw a sentiment on a building
we all can appreciate~

"wishing us all a world of
peace ~ love ~ understanding"

Back home, playing with Brody.
His simple pleasures: diving onto

a cloth belt.

December 18, 2006 ~ Monday

Took a ride with David to Cape Porpoise... a soft gray blue day.

Low tide

Polly watches from the safety of the
kitchen counter as Brody helps with
the wrapping paper before a last
minute trip to the Post Office.

One snowy winter while walking through
our wooded area, we noticed apples
wedged into the branches of
all kinds of trees and discovered
a squirrel was responsible. What a
brilliant way for critters to store
food for winter. I thought I would
help out this year with our extras.

Back to the studio just before sunset.

December 19, 2006 Tuesday afternoon....much colder

the Clam Shack is closed for the
season but Santa resides inside!

The sky is inspiring me.

I love the blues.

December 20, 2006 ~ Wednesday ~ sunny and cold

Today started out with the giant
pumpkins at the foot of the stairs.
Dave brought them in last night for
fear the cold would turn them to mush.

Ellie May gazes out at the house
from her studio window.

Polly takes in the morning sun in one
of her many baskets.

December 21, 2006 ~ Winter Solstice~ Thursday ~ sunny and moderate

A cardinal perched outside the studio window on the winter solstice.

Ellie May watches for me to bring
over her breakfast.

December 22, 2006 ~ Friday ~ sunny and coldish ~ no snow

Polly really knows how to relax!

Sometimes it is a juggling act to
paint with
Ellie May on my lap.

We're working on making our
"Season's Greetings" cards!

Meanwhile, David is up on the roof
freezing and trying to accomplish
something before the weather changes
for the worse.

December 23, 2006 ~ Saturday ~ a heavy rain all day~

It rained all day and as we drove out to do errands, we paused to observe cows along the way
and the mist on the field.
Also saw some wild turkeys in the field....this isn't typical weather for Maine at the end of December.
Was about 50 degrees F.

December 24, 2006 ~ Sunday ~ sunny ~

David was up til the wee hours of the morning working on our e-card
and when I checked our mail this morning..there it was!

Have a cup of cheer with Brody!

Happy Birthday Dad!

December 26, 2006 ~ Tuesday ~ drizzly and gray ~

The surfers are out this afternoon!

December 26, 2006

Tonight I let Ellie May out on the
porch...while I ran over to the
house for something.
It's cold out so I didn't want to
leave her out for long.

I was rushing back to let her in
and I suddenly stopped!
My mind thought I saw
a strange cat along the path.
In reality it was a skunk who was
equally as surprised to see me.
We both twirled around and I dashed
back to the house leaving
Ellie May watching from the porch.

I coerced David to come back
with me with a flashlight and the
skunk had vanished.

December 27, 2006 ~ Wednesday ~ sun and clouds ~

We took a ride in the

afternoon and the dark blue clouds

were enveloping.

As we passed by the

marsh in front of

St. Ann's, something caught

my eye in the reeds.

Sure enough 3 ducks were

camouflaged.

December 28, 2006 ~ Thursday ~ sunshine and no snow in sight ~

I got up early to go over to the studio to put the finishing touches on a pet portrait.
Ellie May, my helper is supervising from one of her many baskets.

December 29, 2006 ~ Friday ~ sunny and very bitter cold ~

Some couples comfort and compliment
each other.

At times it seems that Brody and Polly
could relax around each other,
but she doesn't trust that look!

December 30, 2006 ~ Saturday ~ it's snowing! ~

Here's some snowy vignettes as we rode through town on Saturday afternoon.

Harbor Candy Shop Oqunquit ©NCooperFunk

Traveled to Portsmouth New Hampshire in the early morning to meet dear friends for breakfast at "The Friendly Toast"!
On the way home, our car automatically stopped in Ogunquit in front of our favorite candy shop, "Harbor Candy".

Along the way David pulled over to visit the horses at Parson's Beach.
