About David begins here

I grew up in sea coast Marblehead Mass. I never studied art formally, just a few drawing classes back in grade school. I never had any experience with wood working except in shop class back in Jr High. I made a pair of book ends.

I started wood carving as a lark. Back when I first met my wife in the mid 70's, the artist Nancy Cooper, I saw that she had a used exacto knife set, probably for wood cuts, that was not being used, so I indulged my curiosity with a few simple wood bas-reliefs.

I continued to carve for amusement when we lived in Collinsville, CT for a few years. I did a few carved wooden signs. One for the Collinsville Library. The head librarian, Peg Perry, encouraged me with a commission for the new library sign, which hung over the main entrance.

After moving to Maine,
my wife Nancy and I opened
a gallery in the Kennebunks
where I displayed and sold
bas-relief carving for twenty
some years along side
Nancy's art work.

I built our house and Nancy's
studio and planted
the gardens surrounding them.

More About David

My main inspiration for carvings were from the gardens I created around the gallery and at our house that I built.

Botanical Bas-Reliefs,
as I thought of them.

Mostly hardwood, birch, cherry and walnut. Occasionally pine, poplar
and cottonwood. A few large
carvings, but mostly medium
small ones.
I also did a few detail carvings on signs and furniture and cases.

The last carvings were done in the mid-late 90's around the time we closed our retail gallery in Kennebunkport.
